Last month, the New York Times published an article noting the rise in houseplant sales, and that millennials are leading the charge. Millennials are coming out of college with more debt than ever, and therefore less are buying homes and more are renting. Less home buying means less access to a personal green space. Enter: houseplants. Those millennials are hitting one nail right on the head. Plants make a space more like HOME. I know that at least one corner in every room in my own home is houseplant real estate.
So today, we’re sharing two of our favorite plant shops in St. Louis. Our picks have a few common denominators. First, the shop is well curated in it’s selection of plants, accessories and other home goods. Secondly, the shop is somewhere we want to spend our time. Translation: we like their vibe. And most importantly, the knowledge! I have aspirations of being a green thumb, but I have an aloe plant that has been on life support more times than I want to admit! (It always comes back though!) In our experience, these shops are the real deal and never hesitate to give you care information, or take a phone call when you have a fern headed for the grave.
First up, Bowood Farms. Tucked in the northern part of the Central West End neighborhood this store is truly a hidden gem. If you’ve never visited, you absolutely need to right that wrong.
Browse their carefully curated home goods, amazing plant selection and outdoor nursery. Heck, you can make a day of it and have brunch at their in-house Cafe Osage. (shout out to the peach bourbon sour!). Y’all, we would MOVE IN to this place if they would let us! A former warehouse from the 1920's, every inch of this space is thoughtful and well merchandised. They have an awesome variety of classes as well!
Next, we arrive a Flowers and Weeds. Nestled in the Cherokee Business district, this space is an eclectic mix of flowers, plants, curios and the two of the sweetest shop kitties you’ll ever meet.
We took a terrarium class with the owner Jessica years ago before she opened this space and have been fans ever since. Spend a little time on on F&W’s Instagram, and you'll be swooning over the romantic wedding bouquets. We hold a firm stance that anyone who was married before IG & Pinterest should get a “do-over”, amiright? On top of being a florist, F&W offers classes, and you can just get lost exploring the nooks and crannies of the retail space.
If you need a little inspo when you’re out and about, here’s what slated for 2018’s trendiest houseplants. We love ourselves a fiddle leaf fig, she's such a robust lady that that makes a statement in any room. The ZZ plant also tops our list for its forgiving nature and ability to flourish in low light settings. What is your favorite houseplant? Tell us where you like to shop!
We love to share our favorite local stops in and around STL, so stay tuned. We'll be sharing more!
